Illicit sex is the cause of falldown of devotees
Illicit sex is the cause of fall down of devotees
Srimad Bhagavatam 6.5.16
Nārada Muni had said that there is a river flowing in both directions. The Haryaśvas understood the purport of this statement.] Material nature functions in two ways — by creation and dissolution. Thus the river of material nature flows both ways. A living entity who unknowingly falls in this river is submerged in its waves, and since the current is swifter near the banks of the river, he is unable to get out. What will be the benefit of performing fruitive activities in that river of māyā?
In the purport to this verse, Srila Prabhupada writes,
One may be submerged in the waves of the river of māyā, but one may also get free from the waves by coming to the banks of knowledge and austerity. Near these banks, however, the waves are very strong.
When one falls in the river of nescience, he is always tossed here and there by the waves, but the same māyā can also save him when be surrenders to Kṛṣṇa, or becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is knowledge and austerity.
We are drowning in the river of material nature and some by the mercy of Guru and Krsna are brought to the river bank of knowledge and austerity (Krsna Consciousness). As Sukadeva Goswami describes in his allegory that near the banks of the river, maya's potency (water currents) is swifter and one is unable to get out of it.
So, in our ISKCON, maya's current is more powerful than other places. Since we are trying to get out of it and take shelter of Guru and Krsna, but maya works swiftly beyond our thinking powder to bring us back into clutches of river of maya. Amongst the aspiring devotees, maya works to pull them into water. We have to very careful to avoid illicit sex, Srila Prabhupada repeatedly instructed us that illicit sex is the cause of devotees fall down. Even permitted sex within Grhastha ashrama is not for sense enjoyment but for progeny. Srila Prabhupada explains in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 6.4.52, that even enagaging religious sex, entails the risk of committing offences and in the next verse, one has to be under the illusory energy of Lord Krsna to create progeny otherwise one cannot create children. As Yamunacharya states,
yad-avadhi mama cetaḥ kṛṣṇa-pādāravinde
nava-nava-rasa-dhāmany udyataṁ rantum āsīt
tad-avadhi bata nārī-saṅgame smaryamāne
bhavati mukha-vikāraḥ suṣṭhu niṣṭhīvanaṁ ca
Pure devotees don't engage in sex even for procreation. There are many such stalwart personalities like Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saravati Thakura.
Service of begetting children is counted only when we are able to train them in Krsna Consciousness and bring a soul out of the cycle of birth and death otherwise it is not counted as a Service. Sex though created for increasing the progeny still it involves the risk of being distracted from the real goal of life, Krsna Consciousness. Sex should be accepted only as much as needed, not unlimitedly. Many times Srila Prabhupada says that better don't if you can't control the restrict only for procreation. Devotees have to very careful in this regard that the influence of maya is stronger in the association of devotees.
Your servant in the Service of Krsna,
Anupamā Devi Dasi
