Duplicitous behaviour in sadhakas
Once we've been initiated into process of devotional service, one must seriously consider that we're watering the seed, not weed. In course of practicing bhakti yoga, one may cultivate, anarthas (undesirable objects)- which are weeds surrounding suffocates the growth of bhakti lata bija.
List of anartha is categorised as follows
Primary anartha
1, kama (desire) , krodha (anger), lobha (greed) , moha (delusion), mada (madness) and matsarya (enviousness)
Secondary anartha
2, kuṭi-nāṭi (duplicity) and pratiṣṭhāśā (the desire for name and fame and for high position), jīva-hiṁsā (envy of other living entities), niṣiddhācāra (accepting things forbidden in the śāstra), lābha (profit, desire for material gain) and pūjā (hankering for popularity).
Tertiary anartha
3, subtle desires remain in the mind for impersonalism, monism, success and the four principles of religious activity (dharma, artha, kāma and mokṣa).
By performance of bhajana kriya — the functions of devotional service properly, the anartha disappear without extraneous endeavour. Nevertheless, we must learn to distinguish seed from weed outwardly it may appear similar. And uproot the weed that hides the creeper of devotional service.
To wash away all dirty things accumulated within the heart, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu advised everyone to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra. The first result will be that the heart is cleansed (ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam (CC Antya 20.12)).
Bhakti Vinoda Thakura, in his bhajan rahasya has classified such duplicitous behaviour in sadhaka (imitators)
There are three kinds of bhakti-sādhakas: svaniṣṭha, pariniṣṭhita and nirapekṣa. The hypocrisy that can be demonstrated by each is described below.
The svaniṣṭha-sādhaka is a householder devotee who serves Śrī Hari and completely abandons the rules and prohibitions prescribed within varṇāśrama. The deceits of such sādhakas are to indulge in sense enjoyment on the pretext of sādhana-bhakti; to serve wealthy and influential materialists instead of unpretentious devotees; to accumulate more wealth than necessary; to be enthusiastic for futile, temporary enterprises; to indulge in false doctrines; and to adopt the dress of a renunciant in order to obtain material prestige.
The pariniṣṭhita-sādhaka is a householder devotee who serves and worships the Supreme Lord according to rules and regulations. His deceit is that externally he makes a show of strict adherence to rules and regulations (pariniṣṭhita ), but inwardly he remains attached to material objects. He also prefers the association of jñānīs, yogīs, philanthropists and materialists to that of resolute, loving devotees.
The deceit of the nirapekṣa-sādhaka (the renunciant) is that he maintains pride by thinking himself to be the topmost Vaiṣṇava; he adopts the dress of a renunciant and due to false ego regards other sādhakas as inferior; he collects wealth and other material assets; he associates with women and materialistic people;he collects wealth in the name of bhajana; he is overly attached to the external dress and rules of the renounced order and thereby weakens his affection for Śrī Kṛṣṇa; and so forth.
Firstly to remove anartha of duplicity, one must be honest with oneself and others.
Secondly, we need to confide with an intimate devotee
Thirdly, The mind should be devoid of duplicity, and one should think of the welfare of all. BG 17.16, Purport
4, by ready to admit one’s fault and willing to accept punishment for the sake of rectification.
5, carrying out the orders of Spiritual master in toto without cheating
6, The impersonalists are full of duplicity. Sometimes they pretend to execute devotional service, but their ultimate idea is to become one with the Supreme. This is duplicity, kapaṭa. (to become enjoyer, claiming proprietorship etc.)
7, one must be very frank and open-minded (amāyinaḥ) To be situated in a lower status of life is not a disqualification for success in devotional service.
8, by cultivating the attitude of servitude
Rukmini devi as an example for non duplicitous wife
Fortunately, O mistress of the house, you have always rendered Me faithful devotional service, which liberates one from material existence. This service is very difficult for the envious to perform, especially for a woman whose intentions are wicked, who lives only to gratify her bodily demands, and who indulges in duplicity.
